IT Solutions – Transportation
Major Metropolitan Transportation Agency Depends on the Reliability, Scalability and Serviceability of Sun Microsystems™, Inc.’s Infrastructure Solutions for their Emergency Control and Communications Center
The transportation needs of a major, metropolitan transit system with a large, suburban service area and service to two major airports require an incredible coordination of resources and services. With over 1.5 million rides taken on over 3,000 buses and rapid transit cars each day, a wide spectrum of operational issues must be addressed with multiple lines of communication between the emergency control and communications center and the transit system vehicles and garages.
Transit operations are a 24 x 7 business with emergency personnel working around the clock to ensure the smooth operations of a massive fleet that supports a broad service area with more than 12,000 posted bus stops and seven train routes over 222 miles of track. Vehicles are tracked with GIS responders, radio communications and a variety of tracking and incident-reporting systems. Gemini Facilities CORE Group worked closely with Sun Microsystems™, Inc. to provide the agency with the infrastructure solution they could depend on for reliability, scalability and serviceability in their mission-critical environment.
Sun Microsystems™, Inc.’s workstations with dual monitor capabilities provide the monitoring stations for the command center personnel, while GIS, database and application programs are supported by a variety of Sun Microsystems™, Inc.’s entry level and midrange servers and data center storage. Sun provided this agency with a highly resilient and robust platform, with the processing power to support additional functionality without degradation in performance. Even during times of peak demand the server environment has sufficient processing power to enable quick response to emergency transportation incidents and mobilization of resources.
The agency’s key business challenges were:

Obtain a highly reliable, scalable and serviceable infrastructure to support mission-critical applications in the emergency control and communications center.
Access multiple sources of emergency communication protocols to effectively reduce the time for mobilization of resources in response to incident reports.
The agency’s key business challenges were met:
Performance and functional standards for reliability, scalability and serviceability provide the agency with a dependable infrastructure based on the Solaris™ Operating System environment and Sun Microsystems™, Inc.’s workstations, servers and storage devices.
Response time to incidents decreases as multiple levels of communication are accessed to pinpoint the incident location and resources are rapidly deployed,
