AI has entered the hype cycle, and large language models (LLMs) have introduced new ways for organizations to accelerate productivity. We’re excited to share more about our overarching point of view on generative AI and how we plan to use it!

Contextualizing the recent AI renaissance

AI “1.0” was more of a concept than a solution

Before LLMs entered the mainstream, AI in recruiting was more conceptual. Many solutions focused on using AI to make hiring decisions, introducing a lot of regulatory scrutiny. For example, New York City recently passed a regulation constraining the ability to use AI in recruiting decisions. Other US states are expected to follow, while the EU has had existing regulation for years.

To be frank, AI was still nascent, and the infrastructure and algorithms were still being tested. There were a lot of open questions: “Does it work? Does it make recruiters more efficient?” Historically, we’ve seen mixed results, at best. To paint an analogy, Emil, our VP of Engineering, draws parallels to streaming video before internet infrastructure took off. “Netflix knew long ago that streaming video would be the future, but the internet infrastructure to support it hadn’t been developed. Instead of building their broadband networks and wasting countless dollars competing with AT&T and Comcast, they focused on delivering a world-class consumer experience with their mail-in service. Once the infrastructure improved, they strategically pivoted into streaming. This approach was a win-win for Netflix; they built strong brand loyalty and could capitalize on technology improvement to enhance their services.”

The AI renaissance is giving Gem the upper hand

Similarly, Gem has prioritized the user experience since its inception, while many HR tech companies focused on building internal AI algorithms. With the advent of LLMs like ChatGPT, Bard, and others, many of these past AI investments in recruiting tech are now obsolete. It’s a whole new world where the leaders and innovators are being redefined. And now that Generative AI is here and proven, we will capitalize on the best of both worlds – an award-winning solution that users love combined with more powerful workflows and less manual work.

One of the most important guardrails for LLMs is that they are only as good as the data they work with (you don’t want “garbage in, garbage out”). Gem prides itself on ingesting and processing data from the tools and platforms recruiters use the most—sourcing sites, email, applicant tracking systems, and more—so that the candidate profiles you see are complete and up-to-date. So what does that mean for our customers? It means that Gem's enhancements with AI will operate on the cleanest data available, so its output will be insightful and practical.

Many of our customers have asked us about our point of view on AI. Is it for real? Will it take away jobs? From what we can see, AI is the real deal; it’s going to deliver tremendous value to businesses and products worldwide. But we don’t believe that AI will replace recruiters. Instead, it’s going to make them better. Much Better.

Introducing Gem’s inaugural AI enhancements

Auto-generated, personalized outreach sequences

Gem AI helps recruiters to work faster by removing the burden of email writing. With a few user inputs, Gem will auto-generate a sequence template for mass outreach. This enhancement addresses one of the most significant pains recruiters face: the "blank slate" problem. It's hard to see a blank text box and start from scratch, especially for recruiters new to the platform.

When creating a sequence, you’ll see a prompt to generate the sequence template. Once you fill in the questionnaire, hit “Generate,” you’ll see an auto-generated template that you can edit to make your own.

But generic, canned emails rarely get a response. Gem AI also personalizes each message by inserting custom email tokens that reference the unique attributes of each’s candidate’s profile.

Faster talent search

Searching for qualified candidates to source takes time. Recruiters often juggle between multiple screens and systems as they translate the requirements from the job description into search criteria across multiple applications and websites.

Gem helps recruiters by automatically generating search queries based on the specific elements of a job description for the position. Simply select a job or enter a job description to get started! Gem AI will automatically identify relevant skills and job titles that are on the candidate's profile, including their resume. With Gem’s deep, two-way integration with the applicant tracking system, these search queries will not only surface prospects in Gem but also any past applicants and silver medalists in your ATS!

CRM Search

Prioritized inbound applications

Reviewing inbound applications is one of the most painstaking challenges for talent acquisition teams. Large volumes of unqualified applicants make it difficult to find those that meet the criteria and risk the chance that great candidates get overlooked.

Gem’s AI Skill Suggestions helps recruiters find qualified candidates faster, by suggesting relevant skills and keywords to filter for in your inbound queue. Gem suggests relevant keywords from the job description set in your ATS and can recommend additional suggestions based on skills you’ve already entered.

Unlike other recruiting AI tools, Gem does not deploy any automated decision-making tools (AEDT) or AI/ML to process hiring decisions. Therefore, Gem AI does not create any hidden bias nor is it impacted by recent regulations governing the use of AI in recruitment.

What’s coming next

Generative AI has opened up a world of possibilities, and Gem has a dedicated team focused on better understanding this landscape and prioritizing investments that will deliver the most value. As the world of AI continues to evolve, Gem will focus on identifying and incorporating the winners. Some preliminary ideas that are coming (this list is by no means exhaustive)

  • Omni-site sourcing: source candidates on any site or platform

  • Reduced inbox fatigue: higher accuracy and more granular detection of which candidates have replied with interest

  • Additional automated workflows: summarizing interviews notes, scheduling, and more

As the world of AI continues to evolve, Gem will focus on identifying and incorporating the winners.

On a broader note, Gem’s focus is that recruiters depend on AI to prioritize work, not to make candidate decisions. Given the tight regulatory scrutiny we’re seeing in places like New York, California, and Europe regarding automated decision making tools, we want to prioritize lower risk, higher impact investments that will allow our customers to use our features without the burden of becoming highly regulated. That means our product is here to accelerate recruiter productivity, not to make hiring decisions.
